It should have been introduced earlier and it gave same-sex couples the same rights under the law and the tax system that I enjoy as a married person. Belatedly, only this weekend, the Church of England has finally admitted that it is not realistic or likely that Churches will be forced to conduct same-sex weddings.
As for those who claim that it will cost my party the next election, the poll shows that of those for whom it will be an important issue at the next election, more said that they would be more likely to vote for a party that supports same-sex marriage than those who said that they would be less likely to do so.
Friend has made it clear that she would not introduce a Bill to this House if it in any way impinged on the liberal and conservative views on same sex marriage in Exeter freedom of Churches or ministers.
Yet over the past two days we have heard that there is already some diversity of opinion within the established church on the matter of gay marriage. We are capable of accommodating both. There has been much discussion about the powers of liberal and conservative views on same sex marriage in Exeter European Court of Human Rightsbut I believe that its case law is clear: the question of whether—and if so, how—to allow same-sex marriage must be left to individual states to decide for themselves.
The formal proposed legal relationships of married same-sex couples cannot therefore be construed as being identical to those of married opposite-sex couples. I feel that I have been living with a false sense of security after the legislative changes of the past decade.
He wanted to know where I stood on the issue of redefining marriage. Marriage is about protecting the future. The way in which I hope to enforce this debate is by evidence rather than by advocacy. Gentleman that this is an institution that should now be open to all.
I do not agree with the scenario described by the noble Lord, Lord Davies of Stamford, of endless litigation costing millions of pounds. Maria Miller Commons. We will not allow one belief to exist at the expense of the other. The only thing that one can say is that legislation is now in place that should deter that.
